A Storied Past at Kill Devil Hills
Kill Devil Hills received its municipal charter in 1953, but the area is full of interesting history. One of the questions many people ask about is the origin of the name. There are several versions of the story. One version states that in the 1700's William Byrd of Virginia, apparently no admirer of the Carolinas, wrote that "most of the rum they get in the country comes from New England, and is so bad and unwholesome that it is not improperly called "Kill Devil." Another version states that there may have been a brand of rum called Kill Devil, washed ashore from a ship wreck. Still another tale, is that the name came from scavengers that would loot stranded shipwrecks during the Colonial era and hide there stolen rum or "Kill Devil" in the sand dunes common in the area.
A highlight of the area is the Wright Brothers National Memorial, a National park dedicated to honoring the Wright Brothers and their historical experiments leading to the world's first man-powered flight. The Monument sits on top a sand dune that was stabilized and was near the original location where the the first flight took place.
