Southern Shores: Making A Name for Itself as a Great OBX Community
Southern Shores was originally part of the Kitty Hawk community. It was founded as a resort in 1946 and then incorporated as a town in 1979. The area was the historical site of the Paul Gamiels Hill Lifesaving Station, which was manned by the U.S. Coast Guard throughout World War II. Southern Shores is also home to the historical Southern Shores Flat Tops. These homes were designed and built by developer Frank Stick from the 1940's to the early 1960's. They were a unique blend of the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural style blended with a comfortable island style. Indigenous materials were used to build the homes with block being manufactured locally with sand mined from the nearby beaches and wood cabinets and trim from locally harvested juniper. Only a handful of these historic cottages remain today.
